This contest is open to 6th–10th grade students who reside in the chapter’s service area of Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Nottoway, or Prince Edward Counties in Virginia.
 
📜 About the Contest
We’re excited to invite students in grades 6–10 to participate in our essay contest! This year’s theme, “Why Voting Matters: The Legacy of Women’s Suffrage,” encourages young writers to explore how the fight for women’s voting rights shaped our democracy — and why every vote still matters today.
 
✍️ What to Write About
This is a chance for students to connect history with the present, express their ideas, and let their voices shine. Students are encouraged to address:
  • The historical struggle for women’s right to vote
  • Why voting is important in a democracy
  • How the suffrage movement impacts citizens today
  • Why young people should care about civic participation
 
🔍 Judging
Essays must be within the word count range for the appropriate grade level. The divisions and word counts are:
  • Division 1 (Grades 6-7): 400-600 words
  • Division 2 (Grades 8-9): 600-800 words
  • Division 3 (Grade 10): 800-1,000 words
 
Essays should show thoughtfulness and a clear understanding of the topic AND must be student’s own original work. Use of AI tools will result in disqualification.
 
🏆 Prizes & Recognition
One winner will be selected for each of the three divisions. Winners will receive:
  • a $50 gift card
  • a certificate of achievement
